OOC: how many more days before we reach the outskirts of the siege? Vadania will select different spells then. It took roughly four days for the original journey out away from the camp. The road is more of an indirect route and the construct is not quick so Vadania would estimate at least another five days - though the group could knock it down to four or less by hustling along for longer hours. Lynette though notes that the construct is tireless and could cover the distance in half the time or less if there was some way to cram everyone inside or hitch them up behind, and there was a small farmstead about half a day along this road.

The morning continues without any more activity of note, the goblins long since fled. As mid-day approaches the farmstead comes into view, a burnt-out shell of blackened wood and stone just off from the road.
The place is not abandoned though as in the courtyard Vadania can make out two wagons, one turned on it's side, and both covered in cloth to make a crude shelter. There is a smouldering fire just behind the improvised tent and the remains of a large animal in the embers - at this distance Vadania can't make out much in the way of detail but also believes that the group has not yet been seen.

Vadania directs Garrot to move the mechanism to the side so that it will be hidden from view. "We might find a crowbar there to try prying open that back panel, but if we just approach with no warning, it may scare away the people camping there. I don't want to scare people away from their food, so we should leave it here for now."
"We can all approach and see who's there, or if you prefer, you can wait here with the mechanism while I go check it out and warn them what's coming."
Tag Garrot and Lynette.

Garrot shakes his head and says "I think the device is fine, let's stick together.". He keeps his weapon handy, and prepares to move forward with Vadania.

The group sneak closer, staying in cover. As they peer over towards the makeshift shelter a large arm followed by an equally large misshapen head emerges and grabs some of the meat from the fire. Vadania can't be sure but she thinks it is what is left of a horse.
The creature in the shelter is more easily identified - it's an ogre.

Garrot looks at Vadania, his eyes wide as saucers and silently words the phrase "this is bad" to her and points back the way they came.

Vadania recalls what she knows about ogres and how druids feel about them.
Knowledge Nature Q2PiLEJVp_1-20+10=
Even more than knowing about the ogre is knowing how druids (well her former master) feel about monstrous humanoids. Should they be killed when possible? Or is it more live and let live? Though obviously the ogre will kill and eat us if it could.1-20

Ogres are not native to the fell, they come from the northlands - Woldegard. The druids of the fell have little regard for them but on the rare occasion they venture this far south they invariably target farms and travellers until hunted down or driven away by the soldiers of Clearwater or Burr Town.

So since the don't hurt the fell itself, the druids leave them alone. Especially since in general druids are often at odds with civilization. But here in the fell, civilization is spread thin and isn't a problem (yet). And it's under major attack right now. And Vadania is a good druid, she actually cares about the people as well as the fell itself...
Vadania joins the Garrot and Lynette in retreating far enough for them to talk (Ylva comes along too of course).
"Ogres aren't native to the fell, they come from the northlands. In the past we druids left them for the townsfolk to deal with, since they primarily preyed on travelers. But considering that the towns are being destroyed, travelers are more vulnerable than ever. If the rest of you are willing, I'd like to kill that troll before it feasts on any travelers. Garrot, if you are willing to help take on an Ogre, do you want to use your device, or have the rest of us set you up to backstab it?"

Garrot looks a little shaken and says "I will do whichever the group thinks best, though I am not sure how much damage we could do to that thing with the device. It might surprise it bad enough that you can get the jump on it though."

Vadania commented, "Those pinchers look pretty mean to me. The question is if you can actually hit anyone with them. Hmm, we should do some practice with that. OK, so we leave the device out for now."
She put her finger to her lips as she thought for a moment, then suggested, "OK, how about this? I find a spot where I can get a clear view of him. Garrot and Lynette, you sneak up closer and take cover along the path he'd take when he charges me. Once he passes you, you can attack from behind. I'll have Ylva with me to attack from the front, then I'll switch from bow to sword and join you. Hmm, Ogre's are pretty tough but not so agile, I might use a flame blade charge, but I'll decide that when I switch to melee."
Vadania thinks some more, "There's a chance that he'll try ranged attacks on me. Hopefully I'll be a better shot than he is. If it looks like he has limited ammo, we can stick to the plan. Otherwise we may need to charge him."
Even though Ka'lion wasn't here proclaiming her to be the captain, she still seemed to be the leader. Well thanks to Ka'lion she was getting used to that. She had some ideas of things her companions might like, such as exploring the other side of the portal or looking for treasure under a lake.

Lynette nods and gets ready to move with Garrot (hide check or survival for camouflage)
It's up to Vadania to choose how to start any engagement and how far to begin firing from, it would appear that the ogre is content to laze under his shelter out of the sun while chewing on his roast horse. It looks like he's been here a few days, probably pleased at his luck to have found lunch given the lack of wildlife.
The missing animals have begun to bug Vadania more and more over the past weeks. Where have they gone?

Garrot will nod and wrap his moon cloak about his body. He will motion for Lynette to follow him and he will creep to a position that allows him to hide effectively and to strike the monster from behind once it the fight begins.

Vadania will launch her unprovoked attack on the ogre from about 90 ft. away. Hopefully that's further away than the ogre can charge giving her a chance to change weapons. She suggests that Garrot and Lynette be 30 to 40 feet closer to the ogre, wherever they can find good cover.

The ogre lets out a cry of pain and surprise and leaps up out of it's shelter, half running and half wobbling in a kind of instinctive charge towards the source of it's aggravation, though it only makes it part of the way to Vadania and still seems to be trying to determine just what had angered it and how.
To Vadania's concern there appears to be a second ogre hidden within the makeshift shelter gazing out with a blank expression at the bellowing antics of it's partner.
In the bushes Lynette closes her eyes and a look of deep concentration crosses her face. As she focuses a sheen of sharp glistening ice begins to coat Garrot's weapons (+d6 cold damage)

Garrot ruefully shakes his head and decides they are committed, and charges out to attack the back of the Ogre facing Vadania. He will do it silently to try and maintain surprise. He will also invoke one of his touch attacks on his spear to make sure the strike hits home against this huge beast.

The struck ogre roars out a string of incomprehensible but angry sounding words as it forgets about Vadania and wheels awkwardly around punching and kicking at Garrot, most of it's blows missing by some margin but an errant foot catches the halfling nearly knocking him to the ground (8 damage)
His companion bursts out of the shelter with a wooden club in one hand and a leg of roast horse in the other, though quickly slows and blinks in the light of the sun as it looks around and assesses it's assailants.

Garrot says a silent prayer, hoping that these ogres understand Common. He invokes the magic of his mask, points at the Ogre with the Club and Horse in his hand and issues a Command (trying to stand as intimidatingly as possible being that he is a halfling).
He Shouts at the Ogre: "FLEE!"
I believe this is the proper use of the mask, and I didn't see that I had to roll, but that the Ogre has to roll a save (if it understands common that is)
