Stravanya carefully made her way through the rubble, trying to stay out of sight of any guards. After about 20 minutes she is peering over a large chunk of stone, as close as she can get by still keeping cover. From here to the wall has been obviously cleared to provide to provide a clear line of sight.
She thought she had done a good job staying out of sight, but realized she had been seen when a voice calls out from above in heavily accented but understandable Common, "You might as well stand up, we know you're there. What brings you to Sarnath?"
The guards are visible, although the ramparts provide them with cover. They are small and green, goblins. Strangely, although they are obviously armed, they are not pointing weapons in her direction.

"your city is full of history, and my friends and I have traveled a very long way to study that history. We absolutely mean you no harm. My we enter your fair city?"

The apparent leader studies her for a moment, then answers, "I believe you. Go fetch your friends and I'll see to the opening of the city gates."

Ok well they saw you and know we are here. There goes are element of surprise. Bad thing since of my race i have no idea how they would react. So going off of ones in my country, they would just shoot or stab me."

Barbatos drops to the ground, figuring that his magical stone worked best with the element of surprise, and turned to Harknail, "have you heard of goblin activity this close to the city? They sound more organised that a simple travel camp."

"The goblins on the wall were remarkably non hostile. While they had weapons to hand, they were not pointing them at me. I told them we absolutely mean no harm becuase I observed no immediate threat from them. The leader told me he believed me and is taking down the gates to welcome us into the city as we speak. I told them we are here to research the history of the city. I recommend we continue to be relatively honest unless they begin to seem hostile.
They're goblins, so I entirely understand this could just be a trap. We must be very carefully observant of our hosts. But one is defined by their actions not their race. As a servant of Erathis I cannot permit violence against them unless we discover they intend to harm us."
OOC: (aka we all need to do Insight, Perception etc skill checks or roll to aid another who has expertise in these skills immediately once we reach the gates &/or begin speaking with the goblins in closer range. I didn't want to burn my sense motive skill check for this encounter on a long range conversation partially obscured by walls)

Two weeks... with all the study and success advancing his magic the time had seemed shorter.
In retrospect he should have expected something to have occupied the ruins after so long, at least it was only goblins, and a good sign perhaps that the ruins were still so intact.

As the group approached they could see that the gate to the city stood open with a single goblin standing in front of it, the same goblin that had talked to Stravanya. There were more goblins behind him and on the wall looking down, with weapons out and ready, but down at their sides. They appeared ready for trouble, but not like they were ready to attack. Nor were they making any effort to hide.
How is the group approaching? Weapons drawn and ready? Weapons out but just held? Weapons sheathed (minor action to draw)? General demeanor?
Since his sword and shield are attached, Harknail usually travels with sword and shield out unless he needs to use both hands.

Weapons held but not ready. Then say to the goblins as soon as we are within earshot "I think we should all sheath our weapons. As you can imagine, we would be afraid to do so unless you do too. Shall we all sheath them now, at the same time?" and do so if they agree.
OOC: unless anyone is uncomfortable with this idea of course

Zem already did not have his weapons out, he knew better then to trust goblins tho.
" If they show any hostility we retreat, they have full advantage given the location currently. Weapons not out at all is best for talking currently, weapons out but down shows we can defend ourselfs if need be but shows them there is no trust. That is bad for any talking so away for now. If things look like they might attack call it out asap. Given this is thier location the first thing they will ask us to do is hand weapons over."
Zem walks a few feet infrount of the group into speaking distance.
" Good ( inset time of day). I heard you currently occupy this fine historic location. We mean no hostilty to you or yours. Can you say the same about no harming me and my friends? I ask for anyone who can speak on the behalf of your leader to talk with me about entering into a possible agreement at this time."

The goblin answers, "Welcome to Sarnath. We are the wordbearer tribe, we'd rather talk than fight. Anyone who isn't trying to kill us is welcome here. But we don't really have a single leader that you can talk to, just individuals who have taken charge over some area of the town. I am Frakra, and I am in charge of the city defense."
Frakra continues, "Before you enter there are some things you should know. There are no laws in Sarnath, but we do have traditions and conventions. If the town is attacked, we expect everyone to help defend it. Unprovoked attacks are likely to be retaliated by friends and family. Lethal force is not used in bar fights, and the participants pay for anything broken. If anyone tries to steal from you, that is provocation and you are allowed to defend your property, though I would prefer if you did so without killing the culprit. And you should watch your property at all times."
"Do you have a problem with any of this?"

Zem: " I at this time can speak for myself that I can adbide by what you have said & your customs as well as rules you have here. I must talk with my friends to ensure they too can fallow your customs. I have no reason to think they cant or wont. i cant speak for them, so i must speak with them before i respond on thier behalf. This will only take a moment."
he walks back to the party
in a low voice
" ok we can get in , but in a place with these kind of rules we got to keep our eyes open at all times. No matter what do your upmost best not to brake them. i do how ever need you all to give them your word to them so that you can come in. Can any of you see issues with this course of action. ? "

Stravanya: "Excellent. You have my solomn oath."
OOC: we should probably each say it to the goblin head of city defense as well, to make them feel more comfortable.
