Aegis, given that he's unsure about the other people in the group, is making sure to stay somewhere to the side, and back, waiting patiently for any orders that might be given to him. Looking over to Hurick, he remained somewhat silent, making sure, for now, to keep his eyes on what the group was doing. "You and Bishop ought to take the rank behind us. The middle of the pack is often the best place for the unarmored. Any other warriors yet un-placed take up the rear to guard our backs. I'd recommend having javelins or some other ranged weapon at the ready just in case."

"So Lincoln will have to be in front to check for traps, right? Shen and I will be right next to him with a shield wall," says Beth. "No worries, Lincoln, we've got your back." Beth will happily take the vanguard with Lincoln, as her AC, HP, and Dexterity saves are all relatively high. Shen should be right behind them, since his shield style could potentially protect the front line from a trap or ambush. "Let's give Lincoln some room to work, Beth. A scout is only as good as his ability to remain undetected, and our clanking armor might alert any sentries. Also it will make it less likely for him to hear any approach or notice traps. We should give him a good 30 foot head start."

Joe here is how I am picturing our marching order:
Lincoln (30' ahead, scouting)
Beth, Shen Hurik, Elir Aegis, Bishop
Kamon-Do
If there is anyone else I missed, put them between Aegis and Kamon-Do.

OOC: Please remember to include you character's name somewhere in your post. It helps me a lot with keeping track of who's saying what.
Lincoln starts down the stairs quietly and quickly realizes a problem. The stairs are descending into darkness. While the top of the stairs are brightly lit, as he descends the shadows grow and it becomes harder and harder to make things out. Straining his eyes he can might out no signs of light from below. From above, the front rank can just barely make out Lincoln when he's 30' down the stairs. However, Elir in the second rank can see Lincoln just fine.
OOC: The sun angle is not lining up at all with the stairwell, so you're only getting 15' of bright light and another 15' of dim light (disadvantage on perception checks). After that it's darkness that only subterranean creatures with darkvision (like dwarves) can see in.
OOC2: I'm learning this as I go, so if you see mistakes, let me know.

OOC: Okay, my bad. I thought that halflings had dark or low light vision, but that does not seem to be the case.

No problem, I thought so too, but I checked last night. Besides, if I was staying closer to the 4th ed encounter this is based on, there would be dim light at the base of the stairs. But since everything down there can see in complete darkness, it didn't seem to make sense that kobolds would provide light for any attackers...
It still made sense for Lincoln to check things out solo first. But now that you'll need some very obvious light, there's no reason for him to be way ahead of the group. Still worth it to have someone with good perception in front though.

Elir gets into rank as ordered, he then takes out his darts. "I know they look small but they that have good impact." (1d4+2)

Elir laughs silently, still in a low voice
" As i recall from our first encounter you saved my life from a few goblins a while back. I thank you for that.O and your still a better shot then the boys, thier pride is still bit wounded but they will get over it."
So guys fair warning if she yells duck it does not refer to thing that quacks. It means move your heads out of the way."

I work for a living. Stay in formation and be ready to lend support if we come under attack. Don't break from the formation. Don't be a Jenkins."

Just what my old captain insisted he be called. Got into the habit. Won't happen again" Aegis said, following the orders to their exact wording, " ...what's a Jenkins?"

And please include your character name in your posts so that everyone knows which character is talking. Something like: Lincoln said, "Sir, yes sir!", just to get a reaction from the half-orc. The above did NOT happen, I think the halfing does not want to annoy the big scary half-orc.

Lincoln walks back the the group and says: "Well, one things for sure. It is darker than a drow's skin down there. If you still want me to scout, one of you is going to have to hold a light. I can dart in and out of the shadows, or I can stay back here with my bow."

OOC: That gives 20' of bright light, and another 20' of dim light. How far in front does Lincoln want to be?

Lincoln looks at the glowing shield "I stand corrected. I guess you don't have to hold it. However, do you still want me in front scouting 30 ft ahead, or do you want me to stand next to these two here and look pretty?" Lincoln asks, nodding towards Beth and Shen.
If I am told to scout ahead, I will go 25 feet ahead of the party and keep a lookout for traps and/or kobolds.
If I am told to stay with the group, I will stand 5 feet in front of or next to Beth, and keep a lookout for traps and/or kobolds.

Hurick: "25 feet ahead is fine, Lincoln." "Aegis, do you know the difference between a corporal and a captain?" "Lt Leroy Jenkins. He was a Paladin and thought he was going to get himself a whole lot of glory. He broke formation, charged into a dungeon, and alerted the enemy to his units presence. They were slaughtered. The sole survivor said Jenkins last words were 'At least I'm not chicken.' But we are not here for personal glory. We are here to do a job. Our honor is in seeing it done. In the end, Jenkins name is only remembered as a cautionary tale, not as a hero."
