"Well, a bow could work if you had special bludgeoning arrows, but yeah, normal arrows are a poor choice. Energy damage usually works fine against skeletons as long as it's not cold damage--without any flesh on the bones, there's nothing to freeze. Fire and lightning and force damage should be fine... although it's possible for a necromancer to ward their minions against that sort of thing, if they're willing to put the resources towards it. Positive energy also hurts undead instead of healing them, so you could attack them with cure light wounds and such--it won't necessarily be more effective than a normal offensive spell, but it's an option in a pinch." " But a bear wouldn't work, because there's no flesh to claw. Ylva and Scar will have problems as well, or does biting on bones work?" Vadania changed subject, " How are you on climbing down narrow shafts? The main entrance got sealed, but the back way into the tomb with the sword we need is only accessed by a narrow vertical tunnel. "

"Claws will be ineffective, but bites should work, since they incorporate the crushing power of the jaw. I suppose that makes a wolf or crocodile more suitable than a bear," says Brennen.
"My people have no fear of heights. Even if we take a fall, we can glide down in a tight corkscrew and avoid injury. If the tunnel is too narrow... well, I can climb a rope as well as any man."
Climbing a wall with the aid of a rope is DC 5. If it's a chimney, i.e. narrow enough to brace your back against a second wall, the DC is reduced by 10, so -5. It would take a pretty hefty armor check penalty to fail that.

The last time we used the chimney the armored cleric got stuck and nearly killed most of the party. Ka'lion saved the enter party with an ability he no longer has. Ka'lion will go but his issent going to like it.
It hurts his feelings killing peoples ancestors or putting their children at risk ( He refuses to open the great door because it puts lizard folks at risk and they tired to kill him.) So he’s not evil.
As far as he's concerned the undead can't be allowed to harm the living but anyone that puts their dead in a box alone, with strangers and abandons them forgotten are thoughtless at best and evil at worse because it allows them to be enslaved by demons and other predators.
His family awakens their dead, removes their limbs so can’t be a danger to others and uses them as teachers. All of which have some spellcasting ability. So he comes from a very different world view then most people do. They’ve lived that way for more then 800 years peacefully while taking care of locals and wildlife.

Verdant comments, "Last time we used that chimney to escape a horde of undead, so we were a bit rushed. This time we won't be in quite so much of a hurry, so we can check it out and make sure everyone fits before we commit ourselves to going down. Who knows, we might even widen it a bit if we need to."

"I can also teleport up to 40 feet, and bring up to two people along with me, if that helps," offers Brennen, who, Vadania suddenly notices, is now standing behind her, with an illusory duplicate in the space he was previously occupying.

Vadania turns back and forth looking at two Brennens. "Impressive. I don't remember how long the shaft is, but if it's less than 40 feet that could be handy indeed! How often can you teleport?"

"As often as I like," Brennen replies brightly. "I don't know very many different spells, but the ones I do know can be tossed around all day long. It's a very liberating method of spellcasting! Besides the teleport and the darkness spell, I also have a ray attack that induces fear in whomever it hits, I have a sonic attack that can shatter objects or damage crystalline creatures, and I can concentrate to detect magical auras around me. Oh, and I have this talisman that lets me manipulate objects telekinetically, and this enchanted monocle that lets me identify the properties of magic items."
The illusory double fades away as Brennen speaks. (It only lasts for 6 seconds.)

I think the chimney was about 60 feet - it took about 4 or 5 checks per person to get out. Teleporting multiple people up or down could get them stuck. But it may prove useful in other ways.

"Aye, my frightful blast will do the trick against most anything, as long as it's not resistant to magic. Skeletons, lizardfolk, no problem--I mean, the skeletons would ignore the fear, since they're mindless, but they'll still feel the kick. Just cross your fingers for no golems. Golems are a nightmare for me. Everything I have bounces right off them."

Vadania replied, "Thanks, it helps to have a good idea of what you can do. Ka'lion has decided that I'm the leader because I won't follow him. Not that he follows my requests consistently either."
"I suppose I should tell you what I can do as well. As you've pointed out, I am a druid. I have a wide variety of spells available to me, but I need to decide which ones I'll need for the day at dawn. I can change into an animal, but only once a day. I'm also a good archer and in a pinch I can be a front line fighter. I can avoid blows well enough, but I'm not so good hitting with my sword. Against armored opponents, I'd use a flame blade that ignores their armor. I also have a freeze wand that works 3 times a day, my new light necklace can send a searing beam 3 times a day. I have a ring that can boost my healing spells, and another item that lets me convert my spells into magic missiles. In short, I have a lot of options."
"Ka'lion is getting better at both melee and ranged attacks, but his first response to any threat is to run away from it. Also, he's traded away his armor for robes, so he'll be an easy target now."

"Well, if we do need to run away, my teleport could come in handy, at least. Nothing like a dimension door to get you out of a jam."

Movement outside indicates that the meeting with the mages has ended, likely broken for lunch as it was suggested that negotiations could continue for days or even weeks.
The group head down to the area set aside as the new inn for travellers, the original tavern beyond repair. There were few here that the group had not already seen - only a handful of travellers had arrived so far - but Ka'lion notes Aldreda is here with Berren, and everyone recognises a somewhat gaunt Melwyn sitting with Xana.
Kreed the merchant is here too with that oddly silent and heavily armoured individual Ka'lion encountered in the west.

Ka'lion will say hello to each of them and introduce them to each other and will invite them to the parties table for lunch. He'll ask them for any news in the area and then let them speak.

Aldreda joins Ka'lion and Brennen as Vadania moves away to talk to Melwyn. Ka'lion notes that she still wears her mask even while eating, perhaps covering a scar, while Brennen notes that the wolf - if it could be called such - eyes him with clear intelligence and restrained aggression.
Aldreda herself seems as cheerful as ever, "Berren tells me you didn't have much luck with your plan. Must have been in quite a rush to get here ahead of us."
The mood at Melwyns table is less jovial as he nods to Vadania, "All things considered it could be worse, but i'd keep your head down around the cabal." He weighs up his words before continuing, "I had thought they died out long ago, we all did. But they've been hiding away somewhere building their power. I don't exactly know what brought them out of hiding but i've heard them metion the Eldeen - I think there is more to their resurfacing that the demon."

Melwyn shakes his head, "It was not me they were looking for but the portal, but it was not what they were expecting. If what I know of their order is true their founder came through a portal such as the one you saw and I can only imagine they are looking for it now."
He pauses, "though why they have not done so in the past is unknown to me. Perhaps they fear others learning the secrets of their power."

"That's nice. I know where 3 portals are so far. Your place, an old tower Vadania and I found and one other back in Clearwater. It depends on where they want to go. I want to keep the one I found in Clearwater. I just haven't figured out how to move it yet without damaging it. It's a wall painting that is constantly changing. I thought it was the perfect thing to have after I retire. Come to think of It. I may know of one other that I also wish to keep. Do you have any spells able to transport big and bulky magical things?." said Ka'lion, "
