As the group travel on through the night the temperature begins to drop further and further. Not unusual at first for the wastes but within an hour the ground is frozen and a cold chill sweeps across the land.
Ka'lion bundles up, only recently having encountered a similar effect in the Steadlands. This was different though as the cold seemed to have a direction, pushing across their path, a wave of charged elemental energy.
At first the party thinks little of it having experienced similar snap chills and heatwaves over the past week but the howl of wolves bring them quickly to a stop. While they might be normal wolves Ka'lion fears the worst - winter wolves, following the bands of magical cold as they cross the wastes. Such creatures were known to take any opportunity for fresh meat and their intellect only made them more vicious and cunning.
It is dark, and the wolves are up-wind, but even holding their ground and remaining silent Ka'lion knows it is unlikely that the wolves will miss the trail as it stands. Still the party has a little time.

Ka'lion changes the parties dirrection - he head for cover and to try to get clear of the cold - using the frozen ground as a indacation as to a warmer location. So cover would help.

This deep into the band of cold the only direction to flee would seem to be with the rolling freeze - away from the wolves. As they are not yet chasing Ka'lion is confident of escape this way but in the darkness who is to say what else awaits them?
(does Ka'lion wish to direct the group directly away from the wolves to guarenteed escape, or return along the path they came knowing the terrain that awaits them? - In the latter case Ka'lion needs to make a survival roll to lead the group to safety.)

Deciding not to risk travelling off course Ka'lion directs the group back the way they came at maximum speed, not stopping until some distance clear of the frozen weather. Setting up camp in a somewhat defensible location it takes a full four days for the ice band to pass, the the party loses the better part of a fifth retracing their steps.
They have escaped battle but their provisions for the remaining journey are lean.
Pushing on journey is uneventful for a while until the rising sun one morning presents the group with a curious site - a forest, seemingly of stone, directly in their path.

"George we are going to need food. It's time to hunt." said Ka'lion

(as a 7th level Cleric George is capable of summoning all the food the group could ever need, albeit at the cost of one of his 3rd level spell slots each day - this can be stretched out with purify food/water spells)
Between that an the endure elements spell there is little risk of the environment killing the group provided they remain on the safe path - unless actively spotted and hunted by some foe any choices they make will mostly boil down to risk vs speed. The rest of the world moves on regardless.

" You mean you wish to hunt, you asked me to prepare extra water but i did both water and food givin i wanted to be prepared if this should happen. I knew our supply could run low on the journey as we both were thinking so i can create some for us now if your hungry. Having extra is never a bad idea."

Does the group wish to trek through the curious forest or around it?
(for that matter, does the group want to do any adventuring at all, or just skip to destination?)

The forest seems vast and out of place here. While there were forests and other areas of growth within the wastes the party had seen nothing in the terrain to suggest this - Ka'lion knew that such places usually existed in sheltered valleys or mountain clearings but this was out in the open planes.
Approaching cautiously neither he nor George could see any sign of a planar break or portal, the forest seemed stable within the material plane. A mist seemed to hang in the air throughout but this close it seemed more to Ka'lion like dust.
The trees are widely enough spread that the cart can travel through but even in daylight the forest appears dark and choking further in. Ka'lion would guess that this is a relatively new phenomenon or he would have heard of it on the path from a would be apprentice. Though it had been many years since the last one had come to his families door... still he and George could be the first to have found this place.

They have the look of trees magically turned to stone. Though Ka'lion does not recognise the exact type of tree he knows they are not native to the wastes.
Looking up and down the edge of the forest it seems to begin quite abruptly, unlike a normal treeline.

Ka'lion searches for tracks - basalick, madusa or gorgon are the most likely source for the trees. The tracks should tell us which one is most likely. +5+IBZGzTghp_1-20=231-20

No tracks at the edge of the forest, though the ground seems to change suddenly as if the whole forest was welded into the wastes - or at least a large and seemingly circular area many miles across.
