So here is what takes place during the sneak up.
Callo is hidden so well she blends into the dunes with help from the spell leaving no tracks.
Our lizard bounds down the duneside and is also very stealthy.
Varis has had a hard and confusing day. He was not use to riding on Lizards. He bounced up and down holding on best he could. On one such big bound he as it was discribed by our druid had the misfortune of landing in a bad way on Lizards horn.
With that sudden sharp pain, varis tries not to cry out and being tought he manages to hold it in. He falls off of his ride into a plume of soft sand. Its not very big but just enough to draw one pair of red eyes from afar.
The Gaurd at the back of the wagsled looka to have seen just only seen the plum given he has not raised a mass alarm as of now.
( the nat one happend at a long distance so there was a consequence but not as bad as him alerting all the gaurds. It look as if to speak to the driver but does not.
He counts the 16 in fornt then looks to make sure none are in the back. Nope.
Then calls up to the driver.
The driver who seamed to be the one doing the leading. Waves he hand to wave the gaurd off.
Then points out in what would be the general direction and guttersounds.
The driver at this point turns to his gaurd points his arm twords where the plum was made. Yells at a second one.
The gaurd in the back seamed to have been on his "dinner brake" basicly being lazy does not seam happy. The other one gives a sturn look at his fellow gaurd. Given he too now has to track up a dune because his boss was to lazy of jurk who just liked to yell at them and this dumb gaurd making a bunch of racket over something he did not even see for sure.
They then both start to march not fast but in the plumes general location.
They dont seam to be looking very hard but will eventually get to where varis is.
Varis can see if he tries to dart out they are likly to see him.
I think its kinda LOTRs Two Towers when they use the cloaks to look like rocks. Only this time its sand dune not mt side. And varis face is in the sand but is able to pull his head out slowly to see the forms moving twords the dune.
I can do a map not necessarily 4 combat wise per say for there still might be away but 4 placement wise.
I will need varis to make a second stealth but at disadvantage given things are not on the lookout for any movement.

As the pain faded away, Varis wanted to curse his own stupidity. What had he been thinking, riding a lizard? His people would never let him live down such strange behavior were they here. Camels were weird enough, they lacked the elegance of a fine stallion, but were a necessity in the endless sand. Riding a lizard though? He had no time to think about it, as two of the individuals down below were coming his way. They didn’t seem to see him, though it was only a matter of time before they did considering he was out in the open. Glancing around, Varis could not see the rest of his party. Gripping his quarterstaff, Varis prepared to rush the two individuals should they notice him, keeping as low as he could for now. Maybe he could get lucky and they wouldn’t see him, unlikely as that was. Regardless, he prepared for his inevitable discovery. They would not live to whip another being again.
(Stealth check at disadvantage)
Bb3yHQtpp_1-20 + 2 = 5 p_1-20
(Varis is prepared to charge the group the moment they seem to notice him, going into a full rage over his own blunder and hatred for watching others being forced into slavery/whipped. He’ll be the one to draw the attention of the group, allowing his companions to take advantage that no one knows they’re there.)1-201-20

Seeing her new companion exposed and the guards quickly approaching Callo throws out a magical web of darkness to cover him, hoping that he would hold his nerve - and that it would prove enough to hide him.
(darkness spell - stealth with advantage)

So ill say Varis right before you want to rage magical darkness sweeps over you concealing your presence.
( stealth is now a 20 total instead of 5.)
The gaurds bump into eachother not expecting random darkness to just show up. and start yelling at eachother. One pointing back the other into the darkness.
Vasis all you see is darkness but you dont hear the gaurds comming closer.
( you can save your rage given it only lasts under certain condtions that im sure your aware of. If not its in phb under rage ability. )
I will make a few rolls offscrean to see what thier reaction is to the semi instant darkness.

(Yep, that’s fine. I was intending the rage more for as I lept to my feet and charged. With the darkness around me now, I’ll remain on the ground and not rage/move as I have no idea what’s happening just yet)

( Awsome just wanted to clarify thats what i was expecting u to do just wanted to be 100% on that bit.) So they continue to yell/bicker at eachother, tho the one who wants to go back seams to have lost the argument. (Cha vs Cha roll.) They split leaving about 30 feet from eachother and proceed to enter the darkness. Each time the gaurds take a few 5 steps in they gutter sound to eachother. ( Marco Polo ). Varis was able to hide in the darkness with no telling exactly where they are or the party for that matter. He does not know if they will hear him if he blots out. Nor can he see where out would be. I will put the darkness on the map. Ill make it today given i have the time. yet do know Varis and the two gaurds in it will not show given the party is unsure of thier current location just did not want party to think i forgot to add them on.

The Pass Without a Trace is still in effect, so that 5 would have been a 15 anyway.

The 15 would not have passed thier passave Proception score. So i did take that into count. These things look kinda dumb in that they are lazy not tgat thier stupid. Also bit lazy but not unobservant. They only did not see varis for he was extreamly far away distance wise when he nat 1ed had hr been closer they most defiantly would have seen him on that nat one. So as good a 15 normally is for a stealth, varis would have been seen. It does make it a 30 stealth for him given the darkness. So pass without trace still helped quite a bit.

(No worries. I wasn’t sure if I was still within the radius of pass without a trace so that works. Think it’s safe to say Varis won’t be trying an exotic mount again any time soon...)

Each sq for this one is 10ft.
Callo and wind u can be anywhere on the N,P,O sqs and still be hidden.
Callo would have to be within spell distance of her darkness spell but given range on it im not too worried by her placement on board.

As Varis watched the guards come closer, darkness suddenly engulfed him. The guards themselves, while he could not understand them, also sounded confused. So it was not their doing, most likely Callo considering the way she had vanished earlier and Wind being a lizard. Unable to see anything before him, Varis holds still so as not to make any noise. He could hear the guards moving around, searching. Using their voices to cover his own sound, Varis props himself into a crouching position readying himself to act. He listens to the sounds of the voices around him, waiting to see if they get right up on top of them. He would be ready if they got that close.
(The plan is to wait to see if they get within 5 feet of him, if so he will attempt to grapple and cover the mouth of one of them so they can't call out for help.)

Varis: The steps of the Gaurds were closing in on Varis location but still have not found him. One is now close enough if varis had a plan now was the time otherwise it would find him.
Callo and wind see the vage outline of a creature in the darkness unable to tell if it was a Gaurd or varis.
Meanwhile Omar is watching on his stomic close by and knows 3 of his friends are down the side somewhere. Yet wont come unless a battle starts given that was the plan. So far it seamed to be working. Yet the darkness was quite big with two Gaurds in it.

Varis listens as one of the guards draws closer and closer to his position. Preparing to act, he pushes to his feet in a quiet rage moving to wrap up the nearby guard. Having a vague idea of how tall the guard is, he goes to cover his mouth so that the guard could not call out for help.
(The nearby guard takes 3 fire damage from my aura, the other I believe is out of the 10 foot radius. I'm attempting to grapple the guard as it gets within reach. Aiming for a sort of choke hold with a hand covering his mouth to keep him from calling to the other for help. I have advantage on strength checks while raging, but if the darkness gives me disadvantage that would cancel it out go with the first roll.
66zxeh7Ap_1-20 +8 = 16 p_1-20 + 8 = 28
(I shall also roll a perception check if its needed for me to see if I can locate where his mouth is in the darkness as I grab out)
p_1-20 + 4 = 6 p_1-20 (rolled again incase disadvantage though doesn't matter much given the 2)1-201-201-201-20

So here are some interesting things : darkness is radius of 15ft. I made it originally 30ftish thinking pathfinder spell. It makes sence to have it be radius 20ft for map simplistic wise. So hence the update.
Second it does not say who is in it has to make perception rolls to find others in it nor advantage on stealth that to me is odd that it does not say.
So here is where im going as a dm rule it for they did not discribe it well via spell content rules.
If your hidden or in the darkness radius all the creatures in it have dissadvantage on said skill roll of investigation, perception and survival. cant take passave perceptions to find or see others in it.
Outer observers cant see into it for it does say in spell it blocks even darkvision.
If you attack/hostail action an unaware opponent in it You have advantage.
As to the stealth bit: given it already gives disadvantage on perception and u cant see into it. I feel it should grant those hiden a +5 stealth that does stack with pass without trace.
This way there is still a chance of finding hidden targets in it but makes it harder to find them in there. So for length just i know its important in our combat and wanted to be sure we got this right.
