Wizard is the only controller type I've got the goods on. I've heard of a leader variant of the wizard that might be more what I am looking for, but I only have the basic set (and can't seem to get access to the other sources I have been pointed to). I guess I could settle on going with a different implement, but the orb is lame and the wand is laughably so. You're right, the Compendium only allows access to the basic classes, not those from PHB 2. I'll leave it up to others if the Wizard is OK with them.
The Arcane Leader is a Bard. Other Controllers are the Invoker (Divine), the Druid (Primal), and the Psion (Psionic). You have to be an online subscriber to get the Psion. The other two are in PHB2. Bard? I thought the arcane leader was the artificer.

I am playing a Druid on low levels, and it is an amazing controller, that can work both melee and ranged. I like how Thursagan fits on this party, so I am not planning to change, but I wanted to share my experience with other controller types

I've found the Orb to be amazingly powerful for a high wisdom Wizard. You can realistically have a -6 to saves (Assuming an 18 wisdom, and the orb of fickle fate, a level 4 item with a daily -2 kicker). Throw that on a sleep spell or something, and you are putting a pretty tough bad guy under, and hard. Extending the duration of an at-will power is pretty lame, but the save penalty is golden for when we really need it.

Sure, but that is only once a battle, for one target, and you are basically giving up a +1 ac and the ability to add your con modifier to your ac (which is probably not going to come up more than once a battle anyway unless you have a really high con). Which is too bad, because I like the idea of walking around with an orb rather than a staff, anyway. If, say, the wand gave you a +1 to hit on top of the per-encounter +Dex to hit, and the orb gave some kind of set bonus in addition to its one-use bit, then I would consider taking one of them.

By the way, I was looking through the magic implement list: am I reading it right that a Rod of Reaving allows a Warlock to kill a minion as a minor action with his curse (and thus get his pact boon)?

1. How many ways are we splitting 580 gp and 400 sp? I think we have a group of 7 now, though perhaps the treasure will be kept in a pool for group items. 2. As for the Moonstone Bracelets, I'm not sure how useful they would be for Laira, but she could take the bracelets until we find a better magic item or encounter someone who can offer a reasonable price or trade for them. Laira can have them for now. But don't expect to ever get a good price for them, that's just not part of 4.0. Besides, they would be a good item for Harknail. 3. As far as gear goes, Laira would want to buy an everburning torch with some of our money. Harknail wants it customized to fit his torch slot (add a ball at the end). This doesn't increase the cost or affect anyone else, just lets Harknail carry it without using a hand. 4. I just got back from Davis late last night, not a fun drive, and will be flying to Alabama in about 30 hours. I will most likely work on leveling in flight. I am thinking of spending a feat and taking the wizard shield power at level 2. I don't think you can get Utility powers from other classes yet. 5. I would want to have a little more detailed information on the kind of magic effects we're expecting, which should make it easier to find the cause of the problem. I suppose it might just be as simple as keep heading in the direction which is colder. A map and local history might be good as well since if we can somewhat predict possible sites, we can avoid traveling straight through really dangerous terrain in cold weather. Snooping around, Laira hears stories about an ice covered tower in the forest that's been there for decades. More on this later.

I've noticed with the wizards I've seen, their AC is not usually high enough to prevent them from getting smacked nearly at will from most things that they fight. I don't think the +1 will do that much. I'm never fond of a defensive style of play anyways, I like blow things up as quickly as possible! (even when I am playing as a defender) I guess it comes down to different play styles. You might also check out the new "Tome of Readiness" Once per encounter you can swap one of your encounter powers for the one stored in the book. Highly highly useful, since your Ray of Frost may not be useful against frost elemental, but the fireburst in the book is.

Check the character's armor class: kmansadventures.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=moonhavenchars&action=display&thread=7682&page=1 Its better than Doran's, and as good as a cleric with a shield. I go back and forth between sustainable grinding and overwhelming firepower stratagems, but there just isn't enough upside to the other implements.

I picked up the book Divine Power yesterday. Lot's of cool stuff. Not sure if there is anyway to improve on Zynthis though. I need to make a few more levels.

I saw that when I went looking for books yesterday. They had that, the three basic books, and the Eberon book, but not the PHB 2 that all these neat feats seem to be in. I left empty handed, but not before having to shell out two bucks for parking.

I'll trade you my toll fees for your parking fees.

I was only going six miles on surface streets, and had to run my car some anyway just to keep the #$%@ battery charged. I miss being able to walk to a good gaming shop in Davis. Baltimore has plenty of video game stores and comic shops up the wazoo, but I had to go to one of the suburbs to find a gaming store.

Anyway, Harknail, have you looked over my wizard's character sheet? I'm a bit uncertain how equipment is dealt with in this case, both in terms of starting at second level and concerning spellbooks.

Anyway, Harknail, have you looked over my wizard's character sheet? I'm a bit uncertain how equipment is dealt with in this case, both in terms of starting at second level and concerning spellbooks. I've looked over the wizard and have no complaints.
I've learned the hard way that starting a 2nd level character with three magic items isn't compatible with 2nd level characters. To keep things consistent, use the same 100 GP of equipment that a level 1 character would get. I'll pick a magic item the same level as Doran's, though I might pick one that works better for the other wizard. He has a magic item that would work better for this wizard, so they could trade :-)
Just to confirm, you want to drop Doran and use this wizard? If so, go ahead and write Doran out (decide why he stays behind). Do you mind if I make this character a current resident of Moonhaven? I have plans to use him as a source of information about the ice covered tower, and a guide since he's been there before.
Does anyone (besides me) still need to level up their character?

I have it written in my character's bio that he's from north of Moonhaven. Zynthis may know something or his people may know something.

Is he from the Featherstone Mountains (far to the North), the forest just past the ridge, or some as yet unspecified area between? In any case, he would have traveled though the forest on his way to Moonhaven.
