Anyway, Harknail, have you looked over my wizard's character sheet? I'm a bit uncertain how equipment is dealt with in this case, both in terms of starting at second level and concerning spellbooks. I've looked over the wizard and have no complaints.
I've learned the hard way that starting a 2nd level character with three magic items isn't compatible with 2nd level characters. To keep things consistent, use the same 100 GP of equipment that a level 1 character would get. I'll pick a magic item the same level as Doran's, though I might pick one that works better for the other wizard. He has a magic item that would work better for this wizard, so they could trade :-)
Just to confirm, you want to drop Doran and use this wizard? If so, go ahead and write Doran out (decide why he stays behind). Do you mind if I make this character a current resident of Moonhaven? I have plans to use him as a source of information about the ice covered tower, and a guide since he's been there before.
Does anyone (besides me) still need to level up their character? Looks like it--I haven't seen anyone object yet. Writing Doran out is pretty easy -- he finds the local less-than-legal merchant/smuggler, and gets hired as a bodyguard/enforcer. The little dust-up with the goblins is exactly the kind of 'reference' that he would need to land the kind of job he is looking for.
Zack probably isn't a true local, but he easily could have spent enough time here to have a small residence. I'm not familiar enough with the attractions of the Moonhaven area to pick out what he would be here for, exactly, but he would be interested in any ancient or historical ruins in the area. Otherwise, he would just be doing routine practical wizardry.
As for magic items, as I said, I would rather have two vanilla items that add up to the cost of one special one (that is, I would rather have a +1 Magic Staff and +1 Leather Armor than a +1 Staff of Winter ), but I'm not going to quibble over it. I didn't have any idea that three magic items is normal.

By the way, from the DMG: During the course of gaining that level, expect a group of five characters to acquire four magic items ranging in level from one to four levels above the party level. In addition, they should find gold and other monetary treasure equal to the market price of two magic items of their level. So a 6th-level party would find four magic items, one each of levels 7 through 10, and gold worth two 6th-level items, or 3,600 gp. *** So it looks like each level, a character can expect to get about one magic item of a higher level than them, or the money to by one of their level or lower. Where is "3 magic items" coming from?

I have it written in my character's bio that he's from north of Moonhaven. Zynthis may know something or his people may know something. Is he from the Featherstone Mountains (far to the North), the forest just past the ridge, or some as yet unspecified area between? In any case, he would have traveled though the forest on his way to Moonhaven. Let's say he's from the forest just past the ridge.

Where is "3 magic items" coming from? The 3 items comes from the guidelines for making a character for a higher level. Such a character would start with an item at their level, an item one level above them, an item one level below them, mundane stuff, and cash equal to one item below them.
But I've learned the hard way that that doesn't really work at level 2 when your joining a campaign in progress, the new character is much better equipped with 3 or 4 magic items vs everyone else having just 1! So I keep Zachary at the same equipment level as Doran was...

Gabe returns to the party after secluding himself for most of a day and night with a twitchy dragonling sitting on his shoulder. The creature's scales are red though a slightly paler red than that of its master. It shakes its head and flicks tail as it looks around.
Multiclassed into Wizards and swapped the Tactical Assault feat for Arcane Familiar. Took 'Rub Some Dirt On It' as his utility power. Also as I'd prefer not to have to create a whole new character I've also made a minor change to his stats Con 12 Dex 8 rather than 10 each. Is that okay?

I agree, that's easier than a whole new character.
