Assuming Gabe waits...Everyone gets off the platform and the magic word is spoken to send it back down. Once at the bottom everyone other than Sart climbs on and takes the platform back up. Those trained in Arcana study the gem without getting too close. Need an Arcana check from ZacharyP.S. Ogremind, your presence is requested here. You're in the new game if you still want to be. Either way, please post.

Know any races that have bonuses to Strength and Intelligence?Zack will pay special attention to whether the runes are more likely associated with demons or with fey.[rand=44094580968471948741508760342228797513061287737720879166525495785]

The scratched runes are in the Barazhad script of the Primordial language. Zachary surmises that they were added to the gem by the Ice Warriors to corrupt the gem's Power.
Those trained in Arcana examine the gem using their second sight. There is just too much sheer power here for them to break magically like they did the fireplace portals.

Zynthis: "Why don't we try heating it up? By the way, why isn't there anyone home? Don't mister Drag-yur-rock or whatever his name was live here?" Zynthis will start wandering around the area poking at this or that.

So, the first order of business is to figure out how to undo that -- but before we actually do the undoing, we should probably make sure that the result wont blow up in our faces.

"Well we can do the best we can to that end." Gabe looks once more at the sapphire, "No chance we can just twist the fabrics and let it break.. hrm, I suppose a second look wouldn't hurt."
[dice=20] +10 = 20 Arcana
Gabe examines the gem and its aura focusing his efforts on discerning how to stop it, or otherwise cease its functioning. [rand=4514515734283534294320098814109658874012032611498550539342965318]

Gabe again looks at the gem with his second sight. Like most spells and unlike the portals below, the connections of magical force are too solid to be disrupted by a gentle tug. But this doesn't appear to be an indestructible artifact (not that Gabe has ever seen one), so destroying the focus gem should break the spell. But that will activate any wards on the spell. Gabe can't tell what, if anything, will happen when the gem is struck.

Sanem sucks his teeth and says "If you folks want, I could shoot that thing from over there (pointing to the furthest point he can see relative to the gem), wizards usually expect other wizards or big barbarian types to disrupt their handywork from up close"
